PUT CHRIST FIRST: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well."

GAME:  STAY OUT OF THE THORNS - In the Creative Journal Writing Class I taught, I developed a game that reinforces biblical truth for the children.  The class was an hour long and it was a great help in breaking the children’s writing time up a bit.  I saw how the children grew by displaying good sportsmanship the more they played the game.  It is a very simple game that can bring a lot of joy to your class or family.  I am giving away one free game for promotional purposes.  The only requirement is to supply me with feedback on how you are using and enjoying the game so that I can post it to my site for others to see.  Just become a regular member and send me a message that you would like to partake in this activity.

Thank you.  Eileen Miller  (The free game has been requested and I will tell you more about this member's experience with the game after she utilizes it in her homeschooling activities.)

Member Response:  At 8:44 pm on July 20, 2010 Judy Dudich said, "Hi Eileen!  We've received the game and have been enjoying it everyday!  Thank you so much!  At night, we have to let our little Benjamin, 3 sleep with the wolf!!!  The kids are amazed at your talent; as am I!  God bless you for sharing it with our family!  Judy"

KNOW, LOVE, AND SERVE PROJECT

Purpose:  To instill in your children that our purpose in life is to KNOW, LOVE, and SERVE the Lord.

Materials:  3 wooden figures (sunburst, heart, & hand); paint (gold, red, & skin color); fake pearl & eye (craft store); lima bean; 1 dime, and small drawing of clock; glue; Bible; string; sharpie black permanent marker; & drill – optional:  used only if you want to hang project on door knob, Christmas tree, etc.; (For younger children – large poster of self-portrait child decorated w/ the sunburst shape traced near the self-portraits head; the heart traced on the left side of the chest; and the hand traced where the hands are located on the child’s self-portrait.  Write their name under self-portrait.)

1)  Drill (optional) two small holes in the sunburst (at top & bottom); two small holes in heart (top & bottom); & one small hole in hand (at top only – remember:  the hand faces downward so the hole is at bottom of palm) big enough to put your string through.

2)  Paint the sunburst gold, the heart red, and the hand your chosen skin color paint.  Let dry.

3)  Glue pearl on middle of gold sunburst, the lima bean seed on the middle of the heart, & the coin, eye, clock on the hand.  Note:  Try to make room on wooden figure for next step #4.

(Later, you can expand on these items.  Younger children can skip #3 until later if desired & just sing song after placing figures on self-portrait.  You may also only glue the coin on the hand to eliminate confusion for the very young.  Therefore, you would only have one item on each figure.  We also retrieve our figures from a treasure box we painted.)

4)  Write “KNOW” on the sunburst, “LOVE” on the heart, and “SERVE” on the hand.  Try to save room to write these bible verses too:  Write Matt. 13:45-46 (pearl of great price) on the sunburst and read it.  Write Mark 4: 30-32 (mustard seed) on heart too and read to your child.  Write Luke 10: 25-37 (Good Samaritan) on hand too and find it in your bible to read to your child.

5)  (Drill Option only) – Put string through the holes to make a project you can hang on your child’s bedroom door or any area.  The top hole in the sunburst will have the string looped to the door knob, etc.  The bottom hole in the sunburst will be looped into the top hole of the heart.  The bottom hole of the heart will be looped with the top hole of the hand.  Your wooden pieces will be connected by the strings with the PEARL/SUNBURST at the top, the SEED/HEART in the middle, and the EYE, COIN, CLOCK/HAND at the bottom.

6)  Read each Bible verse while displaying your Know, Love, & Serve Project

PEARL/SUNBURST:  Explain: We need to put Christ at the center of our lives so we will have a valuable Christ-centered vision for life.  This bible passage compares this Christ-centered vision to the PEARL OF GREAT PRICE.

SEED/HEART:  Explain: Our love grows inside us just like a seed grows.  The more we turn to Christ – the greater our love will grow.  It is this growth in the love of Christ that makes our words and actions pleasing to God.

EYE/COIN/CLOCK/HAND:  The Good Samaritan took the TIME (clock) and MONEY (coin) to care for the injured traveler without caring about the PERCEPTION (eye) of what others would think of his kind actions.  This is because the Jews & Samaritans were not getting along at the time but he helped the traveler anyway.  (Love your enemies).

7)  Sing:  Sing the following KNOW, LOVE, & SERVE song after you ask your child to place their wooden pieces where they belong on their self-portrait or after you hang your project/ornament.  Younger children can have their name written under their self-portrait & every time you place your figures on their portrait their identity as a Christian is reinforced & they learn to spell their name. (I used magnet letters my pre-schooler would just lay each appropriate letter on top of his written name beneath his self-portrait.)

Creation Display

Create a display of God’s Creation (7 days) with God at the center of the display for Day 7 – the day of rest (I found a picture as one enters the doors of a Church with a Crucifix seen above the altar).

Day 1 – Light So Bright

Day 2 – Sky So High

Day 3 – Earth and Sea

Day 4 – Sun, Moon, and Stars

Day 5 – Birds and Fish

Day 6 – Beasts and Us

Day 7 – Day of Rest (Center)

All around the center (Day 7) display pictures of what God created each day.  You should have six separate pictures for the six other days of Creation.  You may show this Creation display when you start out some of your lessons for the day.  Remind your child that everything revolves around and is dependant on God (the Nucleus of Life).  Then sing the following Creation song while pointing to the appropriate picture.

The Days of Creation

(Sung to the tune of “The 12 Days of Christmas”)

The First Day of Creation

 BREAD OF LIFE WORK

I purchased a patten, chalice, and unconsecrated hosts from a religious supplier.  My four year old sets the table.  I show him a picture of the last supper and then we sing this song:

BEGINNER'S JOURNAL WITH THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY

I made beginner journals with tracings of all twenty mysteries of the rosary for you to order at $9.50 plus shipping and handling.  You can read the mystery (bible verse) to your child and pray the rosary together.  Afterwards, have your child write a sentence in their journal and they could just focus on coloring the tracing I made on that page for their art work.  Just send me a note under my e-mail link at the end of the tutorial services section.  I held a class this year for kindergarten children and we completed our journals with all twenty mysteries of the rosary.  The children all wrote and created their sentences nicely under their pictures they colored.  If you would like one of these rosary journals with pictures of all twenty mysteries, just let me know.  The mysteries include (20 pages for journaling):
